I'm still ticking!

Apparently I've just turned into a bad blogger.  I can't say for sure I will get back to my regular blogging self anytime in the next century, but what I can do is blog when it's feasible and not blog when it isn't.  Sounds fair to me!

Since we last parted ways...

I've suffered the loss of a friend.  My friend was Friday Night Lights.  I watched all 5 seasons on Netflix and then...felt empty.  For 5 seasons I lived in Dillon,TX.  For 5 seasons I "cared" about football and the lives of my many "friends".  For 5 seasons, I got all caught up in the drama and then....nothing.  Empty.  I'm trying to replace my friend, but so far nothing has hooked me yet.  I will let you know if/when that changes.

Since we last parted ways...

I've traveled to Huntington Beach, CA to visit my brother and sister-in-law.  I arrived on Friday, 2/3.  Eddie took me to our Surf City Marathon Expo where I stocked up on all sorts of goodies.  Have you ever tried the Halo brand sweat bands?  OMG!  I have never in my life worn a sweat band that truly did not allow sweat to drip in my eyes.  Best. Sweat Band. Ever.  I also purchased a visor with a built in sweat band, but I've yet to try it out.  I then purchased a pair of Experia Cool Max PINK socks which are awesome!  We all know how much I enjoy NUUN, so I bought a few cylinders of various flavors to tide me over.  Wouldn't you know I would forget my SPIbelt?  No worries...I bought a bigger one at this Expo which totally holds everything I need - including my cell phone!  =)  Yes, I totally dropped a small fortune, but it was well worth it!

After the Expo, we headed to Slater's 50/50 - Burgers by Design.  Eddie had been telling me about this place for quite some time.  He wanted us to be bold and daring and try the Peanut Butter and Jellousy.  We had amazing service and we were even encouraged to each pick out a burger and then they would split both burgers for us so we could each have half of the other's burger.  We decided on the PB&J burger (pb, strawberry jelly, bacon, burger on a honey wheat bun) and the special of the month, the Pizza Burger (1/2 beef 1/2 Italian sausage burger, fried cheese sticks, red pepper pizza sauce, and pepperoni on a Ciabatta roll).  Though we both enjoyed the pizza burger, we agreed the PB&J burger was the MOST AMAZING BURGER EVER!  I might have convinced him we needed to go again to experience it in all of it's glory once more before I left.

Saturday was more or less a chill day with plenty o' carbo-loading.

Sunday was race day.  Eddie and April had never done a half before.  This was my 8th.  I was, of course, walking the race since I have not been running for almost a  year now.  I have to say that it was probably the most boring course I've ever been on.  You may recall that I did the OC Half back last May and the course, though VERY hilly, was fantastic taking us along the beach, cliffside, and through some beautiful neighborhoods.  The Surf Side City Half was a different ballgame all together.  We started on the Pacific Coast Highway (or the PCH as the cool kids call it) and with the exception of a 2 mile detour off a side road which looped back to the highway, we remained on the PCH through the finish line.  Although I did appreciate the beach scene, it wore out its welcome at the 8 mile turn around.  I will say that the runners and walkers in the race were incredibly friendly and supportive.  The staff members working the race were helpful and sweet dispositioned.

A few cool / mentionable moments.  Around mile 3, I met an older couple.  We were chatting as we walked and they told me the best experience they have ever had was walking the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer two years in a row and that they looked forward to walking it again this year.  What you don't know is that I've been listening to the advertisements for the Houston Walk on 96.5 thinking that this may be something I want to participate in.  More on this subject in another post, but needless to say, I took this as a sign I needed to walk the walk!  Near mile 4, I hit up a hydration station and disappointingly noticed they didn't have any Vitalyte available.  I knew I needed electrolytes to help stave off the calf cramps, so I asked oned of the volunteers and he said he would look for some.  I told him thanks, but not to worry about it and kept marching along.  He apparently found some and ran it over to me.  What a great guy!  Then, around mile 6, I was traipsing along and some really awesome girl who was on the other side of the highway about 4 miles ahead of me came running across the median to give me a bracelet and some words of encouragement.

Overall, I was okay with my performance.  I maintained a decent consistent pace through mile 8 and then it went completely downhill when the calf cramps blasted me around mile 9.  I had a hydration plan of only drinking the Vitalyte at all stations, but the first one didn't have any and then I was only able to find it at the second and third.  By the time I hit the 4th station, they were out.  I hit up a medic tent around mile 10.5 and got a cup of Gatorade that took me to the finish line, cramps and all. I didn't end my race listening to music, so there is no finishing song on this one.

I think it's time I buy some salt pills to take with me on my journies.  =/  Any suggestions of brands?

We pigged out on pizza Sunday evening.  I think I was trying to replenish the 2260 calories I burned during the race.

April and I got foot massages on  Monday.  Then I headed back to Houston on Tuesday.

Wednesday was a pamper-me day.  I got a MUCH needed haircut in the morning followed by a 70 minute hot stone massage that I purchased via Living Social a long time ago.  Although the massage was relaxing, I have to say that I still prefer my deep tissue torture sessions.  ;)

Thursday, I had eye surgery...AGAIN.  6 years ago, I jumped on the lasik bandwagon.  Right before I was to have standard lasik surgery, the doctor decided he would prefer to do a procedure on me called Epilasik.  This was as a result of my astygmatism and it meant a longer recovery period.  I remember being totally miserable for about 5 days or so.  Well several months ago I noticed that my vision had changed and since I had paid for a "warrantly" of sorts on my surgery, I was entitled to free touch-ups as necessary.  I went through the whole process with Lasik Plus before they determined the procedure would be beneficial to me.  This time they decided to do PRK surgery - slightly different than Epilasik and a longer recovery period.  I wasn't able to return to work until the next Tuesday and even then...my eyes were not as they should be.  My left eye was slightly over-corrected and my right eye was lagging behind.  It made for a very unbalanced vision causing me eyestrain and glaring issues.  It has since improved, but is still not perfect.  My doctor basically told me to have patience.

I'm sorry for the lack of pictures in this post.  Not only am I bad blogger, but I'm a terrible picture taker, as well.  =/

I have so much more to catch you up on, so hopefully I will get to writing another post ASAP so you can share in my family's excitement!

M.I.A.

Apparently I went missing again.  Not from the real world, but I've been relatively quiet on the social media front.  I think, as a whole, I'm not very happy with this year.  That makes me sound like a spoiled brat when you read what I've been up to in my absence, but doing things and feeling things are sometimes two VERY different things.  Does that make sense?

October 18th was the last time I blogged.  6 weeks ago.  Bad Blogger.  Here are the highlights of things that happened during my disappearing act...

Painting Class
I bought a Groupon for one of those painting classes at Merlot to Masterpiece a while ago.  It took a bit of coordination to get some friends and fellow bloggers (Kim, Amanda, Marg, and Britt) together, but we finally managed to swing it.  Here is what the "goal" was supposed to look like:

Here was my finished (and framed) product:

Vacation
I headed to Chicago at the end of October to hang with family and participate in The Monster Dash.  My cousin Courtney and I walked 13.1 decked out in Angry Birds gear.  It was Courtney's first (and I'm told last) half and I promised her we would stay together.  I never left her side and we finished it.

While in Chicago, I made sure to eat all my favorite foods.  I hit up Portillo's twice - the first time for Italian beef and the second time for hot dogs.  We may or may not have managed to get the car towed while on our hot dog run during rush hour traffic downtown.  =/

I managed to pick-up some of my favorite candies from Fannie May - most notably Trinidads.

The beauty of a Trinidad lies in its decadent layers of rich, creamy real dark chocolate,
covered in a golden toasted coconut shell.

Of course, the best breakfast in the world can be found at Walker Bros. Pancake House.  Carbo-loading at its finest.

Post race, Courtney and I indulged on the BEST Chicago-style pizza EVER - Lou Malnati's.

Although it's hard to beat the BBQ of the South, Famous Dave's is quite delicious especially when hanging out with some wonderful cousins!

While downtown, I got to experience Chicago from the tourist perspective instead of my usual in and out of our designated commitments routine.  It was a nice change of pace.  I saw the famous Forever Marilyn statue (26 feet tall) and the Cloud Gate.

Management Meetings
Not even 2 weeks after my Chicago vacation, I set-off for Chicago again for my company's annual Management Meetings and Award Banquet.  Every year a book serves as the theme for the meetings and the upcoming year.  This year, Ubuntu! was the chosen one.  The basic concept is that "I am because we are" and that "we are all in this together".  In short...teamwork.  I have to say that some of my disgruntlement regarding work this past year has been as a result of a lack of teamwork, so this book and theme were much needed and appreciated (and will hopefully pay off).

After arriving in Chicago on Thursday, 11/10, all the managers (traveling from 12 Service Centers located nationwide) were whisked away to check into our hotel and then managed a caravan downtown to meet up with all the management of our headquarters to the Signature Lounge at the 96th Floor of the John Hancock building for a marvelous dinner (and an open bar).

Friday was filled with various meetings and followed-up with our Award Banquet.  Upper management has been really great about giving us monthly and quarterly statistics so most of us had a basic idea of our rankings in each category, but there is always one award whose recipient is always a mystery - the Service Center (SC) of the year award.  This award originated 8 years ago.  My SC won it for the first time in 2008.  We won it for the second time in 2009 becoming the 2nd SC to manage a repeat.  Then came 2010...we had dreamed of a 3-peat just to end up in 6th place (boo!).  I had a plan to win it back.  I can honestly say I worked the hardest I ever have in all my 12 1/2 years with this same company.  It paid off!  Now the only problem with being #1 is that there is a large target on your back!  =)

On Saturday we spent half a day finishing up our meetings and then it was off to my aunt and uncle's house to hang with family for the evening.  Wouldn't you know we managed to get our happy Lou Malnati's pizza for dinner!

Thanksgiving
Apparently I like to fly every 2 weeks.  =/  I only get sick EVERY time, but no big deal.  So we decided to resume our annual Thanksgiving trip to Vegas despite the fact that younger sister Linda and brother-in-law Craig were not going to be able to join us because of the upcoming arrival of their first child.  Older sister Cathy figured out that this was our 15th Thanksgiving in Vegas.  We spent 14 of them in a row, but detoured to Orlando last year for a fun-filled week in Disney and Universal Studios.

My parents stayed at the Venetian while the "kids" resided in my grandmother's condo located a couple of miles from The Strip.  This year was a bit different, though.  Normally we manage a movie or two walking from The Venetian all the way down to the Showcase movie theater by the MGM.  This year, we didn't see a single flick.  I also normally hang out at Casino Royale, but...not this time.  I mostly gambled away at The Venetian, the Palazzo, and the Las Vegas Hilton (because it was located across the street from our condo).

We did swing a show - taking in Sting at Caesar's Palace.  It was in the Celine Dion theater, so a more intimate setting.  I loved listening to the background story of how his songs were conceived and I have mad appreciation for his violinist who made amazing music!

The ladies swung a spa day!  My mom treated older sister Cathy, sister-in-law April, and me to a spa treatment at the Canyon Ranch Spa located in The Venetian.  I chose a European facial and experienced rejuvenation in my skin!  I literally felt my skin glowing the rest of the day.  Upon completion of our respective services, we spent over 2 hours in the wonderment that is the spa-experience...the Hot Tub, Steam Room, Sauna, Herbal Laconium, the Igloo (yes, as cold as it sounds) Salt Grotto, and Wave Room while sipping on orange-infused water and delicious herbal teas.

Though I pretty much came home a big loser, I had some really nice hits throughout my gaming that kept the days fun and entertaining.  My favorite slot machines this year were Quick Hits and Hot Shots.  I will definitely be revisiting them next year!

And that's about it in a nutshell.  Hopefully I will be posting more frequently since it is now "the most wonderful time of the year!"  I leave you with this pretty dress displayed at The Venetian:

(Chocolate) PB2 Review

Have you heard of PB2?  I hadn't until recently and when I did, well you bet your bottom dollar I had to get me some.

We all know how amazing peanut butter tastes (or any nut butter, for that matter).  We love it, but we don't love the calories and fat that comes with it.

I typically eat Simply Jif.  It has 190 calories and 16 grams of fat per every 2 TBSPs.  Yikes!

Now let's look at PB2:

Yes, that's only 45 calories and 1 gram of fat per 2 TBSPs.  Wowsers!!!  Now a warning, though...it only has about 1/2 of the protein.  My Simply Jif has 8 grams and as you can see PB2 has only 4 grams.

How do they make this happen?

Bell Plantation removes 85% of the fat calories by a special process without the use of chemicals.  There are also no preservatives/additives in this baby!  PB2 comes in a jar and is powdered in appearance.  You mix 2 TBSPs of the powder with 1 TBSP of water and VOILA!  Instant PB!

I tried the chocolate PB2 on a Sara Lee 90 calorie English muffin and combined it with Sugar Free Polaner Blackberry Preserves (yes, raspberry or strawberry would have been better, but I didn't either of these with me).

I purchased my PB2 via Amazon.com because I only wanted to try it - as opposed to committing to a 4-jar pack on the Bell Plantation website without knowing whether or not I would like it.  The price does come out to be cheaper per jar (even with shipping charges) if you want to buy it in bulk through Bell Plantation.  It comes in chocolate and regular.

I thought it tasted delicious and I, for one, am thankful to have a less caloric PB on hand since I'm counting my calories and every one is precious to me.

Has anyone else tried this?  Thoughts?

Oh my...Tomato Pie!

I couldn't wait to get home last night...to make Tomato Pie...again.

No, I'm not a gluttonous monster.  Well...maybe I am, but THIS particular situation deems the title unnecessary.

You see, I received my daily recipes from Allrecipes.com the other day and what to my wandering eyes should appear, but a recipe for Tomato Pie.  I wondered what in the world it is, so then I clicked on the happy link and found out.  It's made of all things wonderful - tomatoes, green onion, fresh basil, bacon, and cheese.  Truth be told, I wasn't too keen on the bacon part, but brother-in-law Jay told me I had to follow the recipe (I have a problem following directions, you see), so I did with the slight modification of using lean turkey bacon instead of the real deal.

I heated a pot of water to help strip my tomatoes of their skin.  I preheated the oven for my pie crust.  I got my skillet all hot and bothered ready for the bacon...and then I placed 6 strips of bacon in said skillet because I don't like to fry up too much at a time.  I went out to my car to get something I forgot and when I returned, I found my once-upon-a-time sweet Delilah guiltily licking her chops over a tasty meal of 3/4 of a pound of RAW turkey bacon.  That can't be good.  I was soooo mad as my Tomato Pie would now be slightly naked with only 1/2 of the bacon I intended for it to have.  =/  Needless to say, Delilah went outside until the storm came to get us.

don't trust this innocent face

I then proceeded to chop up my basil and slice my green onions.  The crust went into the oven for a few minutes to avoid sogginess as I crumbled my bacon.

I then began to layer sliced tomatoes, basil, green onion, bacon, seasonings (garlic powder, crushed red pepper, and oregano).  I did a second layer and then a third.  Next, I topped my pie with a mixture of 1.5 cups of 2% shredded cheese mixed with 3 TBSP of light mayo.

In the oven it went - loosely covered with tin foil - for 45 minutes.  After 45, I took off the tin foil for another 15.  I ain't gonna lie, my house smelled heavenly.

I took my masterpiece out of the oven and pushed it far back on my island to cool.  Now, I had no intentions of eating it for dinner that night.  It was meant for dinner for the next several nights.

A little while later, I went to the bathroom just to come out and discover Delilah (remember her?) had tipped the pie off the counter and it was now laying face down on my kitchen floor.  I could have killed her.  BUT, I didn't.  Instead...she was banished outside and my Tomato Pie went in the trash.  sigh.

I do not give up easily, however.  The next day I went back to the grocery store and bought more turkey bacon, cheese, and basil to do it all over again.  Oye.

It was worth making twice...it's that good.

Recipe:
4 large tomatoes - peeled and sliced
1 pie crust
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil
3 green onions sliced thinly
12 strips of cooked bacon - crumbled
3 TBSP light mayo
1/5 cups of 2% shredded cheddar

Directions:
Preheat over to 375 degrees.  Boil a pot of water.  Fry bacon.  Chop basil.  Slice onion.  Put two tomatoes at a time in the boiling water.  Stick pie crust in oven for a few minutes and then remove.  Let tomatoes sit for a minute or two in the water, then carefully remove them and put them under cold water to remove the skin.  Repeat for next two tomatoes.  Slice tomatoes.  Layer tomatoes, green onion, basil, bacon, and seasonings.  Top with cheese/mayo mixture.  Loosely cover pie with tin foil and bake for 45 minutes.  Remove tin foil and bake for another 15.  Let sit for 5 minutes or so before slicing pie.

If you make 6 servings out of your pie, it's around 313 calories per slice.

***Note:  next time I make it, I would probably choose to chop the tomato***

Lesson learned:  NEVER ever trust Delilah around food

random stuff

I got my new recumbent bike on Tuesday afternoon at work.  My dad convinced me I should let one of the guys at work put it together instead of trying to do it myself.  Turns out this was a smart idea as my dad had to help the dude put it together...it was a bit complex.  My dad was then soooo soooo nice and brought it over to my house for me.  He kept trying to help me out further by placing it, but I couldn't have him do that since I wasn't entirely sure how I wanted to make the room work.

As a kid, I LOVED moving furniture around in my bedroom.  I thought it such an adventure to have a different room design.  Unfortunately for me, I have a small home and a fondness for furniture.  This means there is very little room for my creativity.  =/

I had a vision, however, and carried it through.  I was afraid, you see, of having to get rid of my coffee table ottoman that I absolutely adore.  I managed to make it work without going to such extremes.  I just moved things around a bit to give my bike a great view of the TV.  I do, however, feel a bit guilty.  In case you haven't caught on, my one true love Penelope went blind over a year ago.  She is 10 years old and was raised in my house, so she knows it forward and backward.  It's kind of mean to move things around at this stage in the game, but I think she will figure it out.

Another issue I've been having lately is with my WiFi.  I apparently forgot my passkey.  So, I've been all old school connected through what seemed like an endless supply of wires.  I had no clue how to create a new password or reset my router, so I did some Google-searching, learned how, and managed to do it ALL BY MYSELF.  Mind you...I'm not very computer savvy, so this was a BIG deal to me!

In other news...found out today that my Galveston Seawall Half scheduled for November 19th has been canceled.  This makes me sad as it seemed like a really cool race.  Ah well...maybe they will do it again next year!

and then there is...training.

Training is going...okay.  Since I made the decision to walk The Hottest Half (not a decision I'm proud of, but one that is necessary for survival), I've determined that the new shoes I bought aren't going to make the grade.  They are a really great motion control shoe for "the heavier runner".
New Balance 1012

I like them as far as comfort and feel go, BUT it's a heavy shoe.  The weight is 12 oz.  Yikes!  I did some shopping on Amazon last night and found a lighter (7 oz) shoe (a cross-trainer) that I think will be better for the walk.  With training wearing the heavier shoe, though, I should be super speedy once I get to lighten the load!  ha!

New Balance Women's WX20 NB Minimus Training Shoe

Last, but not least...I got the biggest craving EVER for green bean casserole.  I decided to feed the beast and make me some.  I forgot to take a picture (bad blogger), but trust me when I tell you it turned out delish and it was oh so simple to make.  I just took one can of 98% fat free cream of mushroom and whisked in 3/4 of a cup of skim milk.  I added salt and pepper to taste and then a 19 oz bag of frozen green beans that had been thawed out.  Next, I took a small can of French's fried onion and put all but the last 1/4 in the mixture.  I poured the mix into a casserole dish, topped it with the remaining onions, and baked it on 350 for 45 minutes.  I've determined that 1 cup is about 200 calories.  That's a lot of green bean casserole happiness!

So, that's about it in a nutshell.  I guess I've been kind of boring the last few months with my posts.  Welcome to my world - haha!

Hope y'all are having a lovely week!

I heart my weekends!

I started off my weekend the right way.  I met up with my friend Amy for dinner at Alicia's Mexican Grille.  Do you know how I met Amy?  I always say she is the only good thing that ever came to me from Craig's List.  I did the dating thing for a while (no, that isn't how I met her) via Craig's List and although I met a couple of nice guys, I didn't meet the right guy.  I also met some weirdos, wife cheaters, etc.  I have since vowed to not go that route again, by the way.  Anyway, I posted a CL ad about 3 years ago seeking out a gym buddy and Amy was the only one to answer the ad.  We became fast friends...eventually foregoing the gym for dinner/tv nights at my house once a week.  Amy moved to the other side of town a while back, so our dinners have become less frequent, BUT the good news is that she is moving closer to me (ironically in the same apartment complex I lived in before buying my house) come mid-August, so that makes me happy!

After our delicious fajita dinners, we decided to go to the bar Amy works at once or twice a week for a drink.  I saw this sign in the bathroom and it made me laugh:

I went home relatively early because I had to work for a couple of hours on Saturday.  Boo!

On Saturday, after work, I decided to hit up Target and Walmart to look at their recumbent bikes.  A wise woman I know encouraged me to purchase either an elliptical or a bike to ride while I'm doing my zoning out (reading, watching tv/movies, etc) thing after work.  This way I'm at least getting some kind of movement in and I can do so in the comfort of my own home.  Target, it turns out, only sells recumbent bikes on-line.  Walmart, on the other hand, didn't let me down.  I found the one I wanted (having done a bit of research on-line) and discovered that I could buy it $15 cheaper on Amazon.com, so I instantly ordered it.  Yay for the Amazon.com application on my phone!  It will be here on Tuesday - can't wait!  =)
I then went home and showered in preparation for my family lunch - this time at ol' faithful BJ's Brewhouse.  I ate the jumbalaya - delish (but my mouth was on fire - haha)!

After lunch, I went home and took a much needed nap.  I was exhausted for the week's work stress.  After a 2+ hour nap, I went to my parent's house for a puppy-welcoming party!  Older sister Cathy and brother-in-law Jay brought home their cutie patootie little puppies.  They are Shih-Poos (formerly called Shitzapoos) - a Shihtzu/Poodle mixed breed - named Willie and Waylon.  We had the best time watching the puppies play with their new toys and with Oliver!

On Sunday, I went out to do 6 sweaty miles.  I walked them and met my goal pace which was to keep it under 16 min/miles.  I am capable of better...or I will be once I get back into my routine and get into better shape.  Just hoping that 3 weeks is long enough to get me where I want to be!  Lesson here - procrastination does NOT pay off when it comes to race training!

I chilled at the house for a few hours and then I went out to my Meliska's house to hang out with Meliska and Liam!  We had a blast!  I can't get enough of Liam's smiles and laughs!!!

Last night I decided to make the infamous overnight oats (Fit Chick Britt is always posting about them, afterall).  I Googled how to do it (cuz I was too lazy to search through Britt's posts, although I should have) and then I got down to business.  The tip I read was to do 1 part oats to two parts liquid.  I had a peanut butter jar with a little bit of peanut butter remnants hanging out.  I added 1/2 cup of oats, 1 cup skim milk, cinnamon, a Splenda packet, and half a banana (sliced).  I then shook it all up and put it in the fridge.

I couldn't wait to try it this morning (after stirring it up, of course), BUT then...when I did...I was kinda disappointed.  My oats were runny.  I'm a fan of thick oats.  My usual routine is to mix 1/2 cup of oats, 1 cup of water, 1 TBSP Splenda Brown Sugar Blend, and cinnamon and then cook in the microwave for 2 minutes.  It's heaven in my mouth.  These overnight oats have potential, but I think I have to work on the right mix and measurement of ingredients.  Good thing I've been stocking up my "empty" jars of peanut butter!

So, all in all a nice relaxing weekend...just what I needed to get me through another hell week at work!

Hope y'all had a lovely weekend, as well!

what's making me happy NOW

Last month I posted what was currently making me happy, so I thought I would do it again cuz....maybe these things can make you happy, too.  =)

Chobani yogurt.
Eureeka!  I *finally* found it.  A little background story...while my family vacationed in Orlando over Thanksgiving doing the whole Disney/Universal thing, my parents requested we all make grocery lists of what we wanted them to buy for our rental home.  Older sister Cathy and perhaps a couple others put Greek yogurt on the list.  My parents bought Chobani.  Everyone raved about them, but stubborn me never tried it.  Maybe I felt guilty cuz I didn't put it on my list or maybe I was too busy getting my dairy fix with the sugar free pudding I had requested or maybe I'm just a dumb-dumb.  Who knows?  Over the past month, I've decided I want to try it.  I've checked out my H.E.B., but to no avail.  I looked at two different Krogers...still no luck.  I searched the Walmart by work on the off chance that maybe they got cool and started carrying trendy brands, but came up empty handed.  I finally found Chobani at the Kroger near my parent's house this week.  Oh wow.  I see why everyone loves this brand of yogurt.  It is creamy decadence.

Lenny's Sub Shop's Chef Salad
Salads seem to cost an arm and a leg these days.  Lenny's Chef Salad is $6.77 including tax.  It is filled with lettuce, tomato, green pepper, black olives, onion, pickles, red pepper relish, banana peppers (I nix these), and then turkey, ham, and provolone cheese.  It comes with your choice of dressing - I go with the light ranch - and croutons (I nix these), sunflower seed kernals (yum), and crackers (I nix these).  Since I've decided to remove bread carbs from my diet for a yet to be determined amount of time, this is the perfect lunch for me.  Too bad there isn't a Lenny's close to the office.  =/

As with all of these kind of beverages, certain flavors are enhanced with the bonus of providing additional benefits.  C-vitamins are added to some flavors, for example, while electrolytes are added to others.  Favorite flavors include, but are not limited to:  Strawberry Dragonfruit, Mango Melon, and Strawberry Apricot.  I find these drinks to be refreshing and sweet without some weird/gross after taste.  They can get a bit pricey, but you should be able to find them for $1.00 a piece when on sale and/or at Walmart or Target.

That Pink Girl knew I was considering purchasing a CamelBak for my upcoming Hottest Half race next month.  Yes, yes...you might think me the queen of the mcdorks, but this dork has had one two many incidents with dehydration cramping during races and doesn't want to take any chances.  Being the sweet friend that she is, TPG saw an awesome deal on the website above and sent me a text right away letting me know I had about 20 minutes left to purchase this 72 oz hydration pack for only $20.  What a deal!  So...if I'm to understand Chainlove.com correctly...they run short-term deals (30 minutes each) constantly throughout the day and it's a "you snooze, you lose" kinda thing.  I'm just thankful TPG wasn't snoozing!  Thanks, girl!  =)  By the way...you can download an alert for Windows and/or for Explorer or other web browsers to help you not miss out on great deals!

Sleeping in my own bed.
After having been at my parent's house for the past 6 nights, I can assure you I am WAY ready to crash in the comfort of my own lovely cushiony happiness.  My parents like firm mattresses and placed them in all the spare bedrooms of their home.  It's like sleeping on a board.  My body isn't happy....but it will be...soon....I can't wait!

I love being able to rent a movie for $1.08.  Their website is so helpful, too.  If you want a specific movie, it will tell you which Red Box closest to you has it.  How thoughtful is that?!  You can also pick a future release you want to rent and set a reminder for Red Box to alert you when it is ready for rental.  I also love how there are so many Red Boxes located pretty much everywhere for my convenience and that I don't even have to return a movie to the same Box I rented it from.  This was an ingenious business design!

Meliska is the one who encouraged me to start hitting up the library for books instead of spending my hard earned money.  I am forever thankful.  I have a tendency to borrow audio books above all else because there is less of a wait for the popular books in audio format AND because it helps occupy me during my commute to and from work so that I am not focusing on work 24/7 and/or road raging.  It has also provided me with a great means of "reading" more than one book at the same time since I can be listening to one while reading another.  I love how I can request a book and that the library will notify me when it is available for me.  They keep it for me for a week and they have such great hours that even a girl with cRaZy working hours like myself can find time to check-out/return books as necessary.

The Goose.
I cannot believe I forgot to put a pic of him in his 4th of July outfit when I wrote up my 3-day weekend post.  What's wrong with me?  Of course my cute mom decked out the house in 4th of July decor - stickers on the guest bathroom mirror, table cloth on the kitchen table, the fireplace mantle, etc.  We all know the main attraction is always...The Goose.

So, tell me...what is making YOU a happy camper these days?

3-day weekend

Watched 6 movies.  Must have been Red Box's best customer this weekend.

Morning Glory - cute/sweet
Vanishing on 7th Street - ugh/don't waste your time
The Last Exorcist - okay
Battle:  Los Angeles - not my kind of movie
Conviction - pretty good
Devil - decent

Went swimming twice.  Starring...THE DOGS!

Ollie wears a kerchief so his head doesn't get sunburned and then he floats in his "boat".

Ate WAY too much food.

homemade suchi - Craig made most of them and they turned out beautifully.  I tried my hand at forming the California rolls and failed miserably.  See if you can figure out which ones are mine.  =/

HB Steakhouse - yum!

and other unmentionables...

There was some bone-hoarding coveting going on...

Delilah looking innocent despite her stash.

Coco on "her" ottoman
Some just plain cuteness...

Sweet Penelli

Oliver with his new toy named "Chef guy"

Might have watched most of the entire Teen Mom marathon on MTV.  Yes, Meliska...I'm all ready for the new season.  =P

Had to rescue Craig and Linda when Linda's battery died and they got stranded at Babies R Us.

It was just the kind of weekend to refresh/recharge me.  Now I just need to make it to Labor Day weekend.

Hope your weekend was everything you needed it to be and more!

what a wonderful weekend!

What a fun Saturday!  I started off my morning knocking out some mileage.  One word:  HOT.

To cool off, I used my happy Metha body wash from Bath and Body Works.  Get some now.  Trust me.

I then went to pick up my cute mom so we could do breakfast.  No family lunch this Saturday since we are doing a Father's Day / Brother-in-law Jay's bday celebration on Sunday.  My cute mom and I went to IHOP.  I ordered the SIMPLE & FIT Blueberry Harvest Grain 'N Nut Combo.  Yum.  I'll just say it right now - my egg substitutes never come out tasting quite like that!  Next we went to see Mr. Popper's Penguins.  I don't know why the rest of my party pooper family members didn't want to see it - it was such a fun movie and we adored it!  I was able to get a diet vanilla root beer at the movie theater - mmmmm.

After the movie, my mom and I ran some errands.  We then ended up at Panera for lunch.  I heart Panera.  I hung out at my parent's house for a while before deciding to rent a couple movies from Red Box on my way home.  I chose I Am Number 4 and Just Go With It.  I enjoyed both movies.

Sunday meant family day. I met up with younger preggo sister Linda, brother-in-law Craig, and their dog Coco at my parent's pool around 12 noon. Of course I brought over my beasts as they desperately needed a play date. Older sister Cathy and brother-in-law Jay joined use a bit later when my mom served us up a yummy lunch. We then hung out, laughing bunches, and later headed to our dinner at Del Friscos in the Galleria area. They were running a pretty awesome special for 2 where each person got to pick a salad and then it came with an 8 oz filet, a crab cake, your choice of side, and your choice of dessert. I coupled of with my mom. We had such a great meal. I just love spending time with my family.

After dinner, we headed back to my parent's house for my dad and Jay to open up presents.  My mom is like Snow White in that animals seem to flock to her.  She is not so welcoming of them.  There are frogs that end up in the grotto under the waterfall in the pool.  There is a bird that keeps nesting in the backyard (my mom is not a bird lover).  Now there is a turtle that has traveled to the front door.  Here she is.  She's shy, clearly.  haha.

It was a wonderful weekend filled with fabulous food, family fun, and movies - what more could a girl ask for?

How was your weekend?

happiness

There are some things that are making me happy this summer.  I thought I would share.

The Voice
Have you seen it?  It's a new singing competition / reality show on NBC this season.  I find the celebrity judges/coaches to be particularly amusing, of course, but some of the talent on the show are truly incredible.  I can't wait to watch the rest of the season!

So You Think You Can Dance
Do you watch it too?  Oh you so should!  My parents got me hooked on this dancing competition / reality show on Fox a few seasons ago and I've been obsessed ever since.  I never realized you could get so caught up in the story line of a dance and that you could be moved to such emotion by the brilliance of choreography.

Movies, in general
Every weekend so far, I have managed to sneak in a movie at the movie theater with my family.  Seeing movies has always been one of my favorite activities anyway, but over the past few years I just haven't made it a priority.  Times have changed!  It's a way to escape this awful summer heat and my cRaZy life for a couple of hours - count me in!  I like to go to the Santikos Silverado theater because it's clean and nice and they have an amazing drink station.  You can get Coke Zero, for example, in 6 different flavors.  sooo cool.

Oatmeal
I want it.  I love it.  Every morning I take my half cup of oats and add in a tablespoon of Splenda brown sugar blend, loads of cinnamon and a cup of water.  I zap it in the microwave for 2 minutes and let my mouth go to its happy place.

Chicken salad
I want it.  I love it.  I bought the pre-seasoned sweet chili chicken breasts from H.E.B.  I boiled them, chopped them up, and added Mayo made with olive oil and then some dill pickle relish.  I found myself some nice multi-grain hearty bread, toasted it up, and piled on my chicken salad.

Crystal Light iced tea
If I'm not drinking water, I'm drinking this delightfulness.  It's refreshing and lovely.

Relax and Sleep
application on my phone.  There are many options to choose to listen to, but I only listen to one - monks chanting - I set the timer for 40 minutes each night and it helps me fall asleep.

C.O. Bigelow Mentha Body Vitamin Body Wash
That Pink Girl mentioned this product in a blog post a couple of months ago.  It sounded like something that would do a hot and sweaty body good.  You see, it's a cool and refreshing body wash that leaves you feeling all tingly and happy.  It definitely helps beat the heat and that puts a smile on my face.  That's all I ask.

I'm gonna be an aunt
Just before Easter weekend, when  our whole immediate family was in town and gathered at my parent's house for dinner, younger sister Linda and brother-in-law Craig announced they are expecting their first child.  This will be my first niece or nephew and our parent's first grandchild.  Our family is on cloud 9.  Linda *finally* lifted the gag order on Tuesday AFTER she informed our grandmother herself, so now we don't have to keep our excitement a secret any longer.  The baby is due December 27th which means for the first time in all of my years, our family will not be traveling to Chicago for Christmas as we want to make sure we are in town for the birth of the newest addition to our family.  I've been wondering what happens in Houston while we are away...

What is making you happy?  Please share!  =)
